3rd March 2011 to 3rd February 2011
BTCV Hayling Island Beach Wardens: Practical Task
Large areas of Sinah common are covered in Gorse, which provides an excellent habitat for wildlife. The gorse is cut back on a rotation system that provides a varied age structure, perfect for the rare Dartford warbler that is found on the site. We will be removing the arisings from where gorse has been mechanically cleared. This work is vital to maintain the ground conditions of this fragile site, and encourage faster regeneration of the habitat.

In the afternoon we'll be moving to the beach to sweep away the winter's rubbish. Beach litter is not only unsightly but can be dangerous to marine wildlife, so having a tidy up is well worth while!

This event will run from 10:30 - 15:00 and is free to attend, but please contact us to book a place. Car parking permits are available if requested in advance.

The meeting point is TBC - contact us for further details.

Please bring a packed lunch and suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.

This project may be suitable for anyone over the age of 16 to attend.

This project is being delivered in partnership with Havant Borough Council, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

15th March 2011
Public Meeting
HIRA is calling a meeting for all concerned Islanders to attend. The topic will be 'Save Hayling from further large-scale development'.

We feel that the HBC planners have got it wrong in allowing the few green fields left in South Hayling to be considered for development.

There is no need for these big developments. They are just an easy and lazy way for the HBC planning people to meet the targets for the number of new houses needed on the Island, as part of the Core Strategy. The number of new units will most likely be met by small developments and infilling, as in the 1996-2011 plan, where we exceeded the target of 450 by 350 units, thereby providing 31% of the new units in the borough, rather than the 16% designated. We accept that we shall have to take on more houses on the Island, as part of the government imperative and HBC’s policy, but if we accept these large scale developments, other smaller developments will also be allowed and together with infilling, we shall probably end up with 1,000 units by 2026, not just the 670 designated, much like in the last plan. The planners just want a quick fix and if this means destroying the amenity of Hayling Island - so be it! They don't have to live here and get off the Island in the morning, nor do they appreciate green field space.

Additionally, we feel they should not go ahead on traffic and infrastructure grounds alone.

We are researching a suitable planning consultant and need to raise a fighting fund to pay for his (or her?) services. This will be known as the 'Save Hayling Fund' and a bank account has been set up to take donations.

BTCV Hayling Island Beach Wardens: Practical Task
We will be assisting the RSBP in preparing the islands of Langstone Harbour for the breeding season. Work may include installing electric fencing or preparing the ground in readyness for the large numbers of gulls, terns and waders that will nest here.

This part of reserve is not usually accessible to the public, so join us for a unique view of this special habitat.

This event runs from 12:00 - 17:00 and is free to attend. Please contact us to reserve a place as numbers are limited. The task is weather dependent and maybe cancelled or altered at short notice.

Please come prepared for the likely weather conditions on the day and wear suitable work clothes. The work site is very exposed. We recommend sturdy boots, warm layers with windproof and waterproof top layers, and a warm hat.

Meeting place: Broadmarsh slipway, Langstone Harbour

This project may be suitable for anyone over the age of 18 to attend.

This project is being delivered in partnership with Havant Borough Council and the RSPB, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
