26th July to 11th August
The 2008 Hayling Island Scarecrow Festival: The Fu
The Festival officially starts on the morning of Saturday 26th. Trail Sheets will be on sale from 9am on Saturday 26th. Trail Sheets will have been distributed to the nine pick up points on the Friday. The pick up points are:

• The Hayling Island Bookshop – Mengham Road
• Relatively Crafty – Gable Head
• Hayling Library – Elm Grove
• The Terracotta Pot Shop - Eastoke Corner *
• J&K Supermarket – Creek Road *
• Paige’s Fishing Tackle – West Town *
• Hayling Tourist Information Office - Central Beachlands *
• Stoke Fruit Farm – Stoke *
• Hayling Island Holiday Park – Manor Road *

* Open Sundays

Entrants have been asked to have their Scarecrows on display by 10am on Saturday 26th ready for the team of nine volunteer photographers who will be going round the Island taking the “official” photographs. These photographs are being consolidated onto a laptop for the Judges to use later that day. The photos will then be loaded onto the Scarecrow Website but not released until the morning of Tuesday12th August when the Trail sheet entry deadline will have passed. As requested on the Entry Form, any entries not on show for any reason should be replaced by a sign saying “Withdrawn” to prevent exhibitors being bothered by “Trail Sheet followers” knocking on their door looking for entries!

On Saturday 26th afternoon, the four Judges will be driven round the Island to see the Scarecrows in their assigned categories. Judges will choose the winners of their categories and then meet together to agree Best in Show. This year’s Judges are

• David Willetts MP
• Brendan Gibb-Grey, Councillor for Emsworth
• Sarah Davis, Hampshire Region Manager Tourism South East
• Joy Okwuadigbo, Head of Regeneration Havant Borough Council

On Sunday 27th there are “Scarecrow Cream Teas” available at 24 Manor Way from 11am to 4pm with proceeds to the MTI funds. Also on Sunday the “Playing on the Plaza” team present The Mangled Wurzels at Eastoke Corner from 3pm to 5pm and you won’t get much more rurally scarecrowy music that that!

During next week we are hoping to host the BBC Radio Solent radio car which will visit a number of the entrants and chat to visitors and Islanders about the Festival.

On Saturday August 2nd we link up with the Hayling Carnival and The Mayor of Havant will be presenting the Scarecrow Awards to the winners previously selected by the Judges. Winners will receive engraved plaques and rosettes.

Still with the Scarecrow theme, Author and Storyteller Sandra Horn will be appearing at The Carnival all afternoon to sign copies of her books about Scarecrows. She will have her two Scarecrows, Tattybogle and Essie Clackett with her for the youngsters to see. The Carnival has a packed programme of Events and lots of stalls to tempt and entertain visitors and residents alike.

Scarecrows will then remain on display for a second week to allow everyone to have the time to get round and see them all especially the category winners.

Throughout the Festival we will have the new Hayling Island Scarecrow Festival postcards on sale at retailers across the Island and also the “limited” edition 2008 Scarecrow Festival commemorative mugs. Hayling businesses wanting to stock and sell the new postcards can contact Marie Telford at the Hayling Island Bookshop for supplies.

The Festival ends on Saturday 9th August but Trail sheets can still be handed in until 5pm on Monday August 11th. A few days later, the winner of the Trail Sheet Draw will be announced.

This year’s fantastic Trail Sheet prize is donated by Parkdean Holidays, Manor Road and consists of a family holiday for up to four places, either a mid week break or a weekend break at one of the other Parkdean Holiday sites. A fantastic prize to round off what we hope will have been a great two weeks!

The Scarecrow Festival and Playing on the Plaza are initiatives from the award winning Hayling Market Town Initiative (MTI) which is Working Together to Make Hayling Island the BEST place to Work, Rest and Play.

27th July
‘Scrumpy and Western’ comes to Eastoke Corner!
A touch of ‘Scrumpy and Western’ will be the order of the day at Eastoke Corner from 3pm to 5pm on Sunday 27 July, as the ‘Mangled Wurzles’ take to the stage, for the latest in the Hayling’s BEST ‘Playing on the Plaza’ free live music events.

Classic West Country anthems celebrating cider drinking, combine harvesters and err............ more cider drinking, will be well to the fore as the free concert on Eastoke’s new ‘liveability plaza’, marks the start of a whole fortnight of contryside fun at the 2008 Hayling Scarecrow Festival.

More than just a Wurzels tribute band, The Mangledwurzels play Wurzels songs, old and new, blended with a selection of self-penned titles and pop standards 'Mangled' in true Wurzels tradition.

In the highly unlikely event that the Sunday afternoon concert is rained off by an unseasonable spot of Hayling liquid sunshine, the music will relocate under cover to the main hall of Hayling College, in Church Road, Mengham.

With an extra special yuletide visitation expected from the one and only Father Christmas.

Based on this summer’s popular series of ‘Playing on the Plaza’ live music events, ‘Carols on the Plaza’, will take place from 4pm onwards, retiring for refreshments and further merriment to the warmth of the nearby St Andrew’s Church Hall, Southwood Road, at 5.30pm or earlier in the event of inclement weather.
