Whilst the shooting of DeMenezes was rather regrettable (7 rounds = bad drills. A double-tap would have done the job.), the circumstances were somewhat different to people attending the Olympics. Perhaps his family think that he'd have been better off, forged passport stamp or not, with the Brazilian police, whose reputation is colourful to say the least.

Security always comes at a price (as G4S are discovering), and that may include the need to deploy armed police and military assets, and to restrict some movement.

The last time I visited France there were CRS, Gendarmerie and soldiers everywhere. They were clearly targeting certain types, and were none too polite or gentle. Compared to the way other countries would manage security, I'm sure the UK will be a picture of restraint.

I don't think G4S's feeble effort will amount to much more than checking bags and some visible deterrence; any serious terrorists will have discounted the use of PBIEDs at Olympic venues because they are likely to get detected and slotted before getting the opportunity to go boom. I don't think any player will be far from a member of SO19 or UKSF ready to give them the good news. The only bit that worries me is that G4S's clowns might be focussing on stopping people with sarnies in order to help various sponsors maximise their profits.

Many of the soldiers carrying out static security at entry points will have experience of searching people properly from Afghan ops.

In any case, most of the main security effort will be intelligence-led, so Ahmed and the boys will be staying at home unless they want to be lifted the minute they hit the street (if not already being debriefed in a basement in Paddington).

An event like the Olympics is more likely to attract a terrorist looking to perpetrate a 'spectacular'; that's why the wider security plan is in place, and why the fast air, AAM, SH and maritime assets have been so widely publicised - to demonstrate that such an attack is likely to fail before getting anywhere near its target.
