Moving away from the Red kite threads & back to Buzzards.
I just grabbed a few pics of a crow seeing off a Buzzard - (taken using 700mm) a fair way away, and soon disappeared behind the trees.

The french eat songbirds, one method of capture is to smear branches with glue, the birds obviously get stuck and are easy pickings!

What a wonderful sight, really nice, dont they have a small head, when I first saw one locally I thought it looked like a enormous weird coloured wood pidgeon, huge just sat in a tree...with its little head...amazing to see.

Gosh, you have been way back to find this from last year, hp.

We were in Burgundy last week and there were lots of sparrows in the trees and hedgerows. Never seen so many for a long time. On Sunday, the fields of France were given over to "La Chasse" - hunting. Men with guns and hunting dogs everywhere seen from the autoroutes.

Going back to the eating of small birds, President Mitterand's last requested meal was said to have been ortolan, small birds cooked and eaten whole with the head covered by a cloth. It is illegal, but still goes on.

As per here: Warning: this video explicitly depicts carnivorousness.
