No Bruce, from experience in the past, iv'e found it better to keep it to ones self, as spouting off at ones mouth tends to lead to getting one in the brown stuff.
Mind you my call on the Jolly Olly was spot on, and what a good job they're doing. |

![]() I do hope you are right though about the Royal Shades reopening as a pub. I first heard this rumour some months ago, just before it the Olive Leaf reopening was officially announced. So I assumed that the two issues were somehow being confused. It would certainly be good for the tourist trade, as currently unless you count inland pubs such as the West Town and Barley Mow, there is an enormous gap in the provision of seaside hostelries, with nothing at all open for business in the main visitor zone between the "Ollie" and the Inn on the Beach. ![]() As a seaside railway supporter of many years, what I would personally love to see is a "Hayling Rail-Ale Trail", based on a Hayling Seaside Railway extended right through to the ferry as advocated for many years by Bob Haddock, similar to what has been done on a much larger scale on the branch lines of Devon and Cornwall. http://www.railaletrail.com/ Well promoted both on Hayling and Tourist Information Centres in 'Flagship Portsmouth', a single through ticket could see beer hunting grockles foresaking their cars in droves, in favour of an open top (weather permitting) bus journey to Eastney and a scenic ferry ride across the entrance of Langstone Harbour. This would be followed by a leisurely trundle along the coast of Hayling Bay by classic narrow gauge train, departing from Hayling Ferry station for the Ferryboat Inn, "Sinah Halt" for the open to non-residents bars of the Sinah Warren Hotel, "Inn on the Beach Halt" for the spectacularly sited pub/restaurant of the same name, "Norfolk Halt" for the Royal Shades, Beachlands Central as now for all the fun of the fair at Funland, a new "Olive Leaf Halt", the waiting room for which would be across the road in that lovely pub's main bar, and Eastoke Corner for for the Lifeboat Inn and Caribou. Ah well I can but dream! ![]() That particular train may be a long time a comin', but in the meantime MINE'S A PINT! Last edited by Owd Rooter; 01-12-2009 at 05:57 PM. |

Unfortunately this property has now gone into a terrible mess, but still very much salvagable. The main Pub of interest, which has big prospects, and being in a prime position is the Rose. But unfortunatley this is no longer going to happen.( Developers and money talks). So the Shades it is. Mind you Kittiewake, no pubs down that end.. |

My submission to Wetherspoons:
Thank you for sending us your feedback. Customer views such as yours can really help us to further enhance your enjoyment of Wetherspoon. Please be assured we will respond accordingly. Mr Paul Fisher Email: paul.fisher69@ntlworld.com Phone: 02392461412 3 Southleigh Grove Hayling Island Hampshire England PO11 0SH Area: The Rose in June, 2 Selsmore Road, Hayling Island, Hants, PO11 9LB Building: Pub closed down. Couple of centuries of history. .Barn in grounds destroyed by arson. Large site, in the middle of the greatest concentration of population on Hayling Island. It should be the best pub on the Island, but under threat from developers Comments: If anywhere within this community is ideal for a Wetherspoons, it is the site of the Rose in June

How long before the other pubs and cafe's close because they can't compete ?

Not sure that this would happen LW.We have had the Barley mow doing their deal and as far as I am aware the other businesses on the Island have not been affected too bad.

In the last year I've sent details of the Rose in June, The Shades and Inn on the Beach (obviously before it was sold and renovated!) to Wetherspoons - in each case I received a letter of thanks and (I imagine) a standard letter saying that the appropriate department would look at the possibility.
