We often go to Wetherspoons opposite the cathedral in Chichester. The lunch time deals are good, especially if you are shopping and want a quick uncomplicated meal. Lots of passing shoppers drop in for lunch on the way to & from the Army & Navy department store and the big post office, plus many other stores nearby. The area draws tourists who are attracted to lunch there by the prices. Also it draws shop workers and office workers in, so at lunch time it's really busy.
We've been in once in the evening and it was busy with a much younger crowd, standing in the bar area, drinking and conversing noisily. It was packed. I can't see a Hayling Wetherspoons being as busy as the firm requires. I could be proved wrong, having seen the success of the Barley Mow carvery.

The Olive Leaf closed for various reasons not solely low trade - and Lily Sugars is probably benefitting from the fact that Creek Road area is now full of houses and flats. The IOTB benefits from location and the massive investment. As much as it pains me to say it - I don't see where a sustainable trade - over and above that already using other pubs would come from. At some point we must reach market saturation - with the high probability that adding another pub would dilute the customer base at all the others possibly leading to mass closures. |

It seems to me we are lacking creative thinkers.
Where are the Islanders who have corporate, advertising, boardroom etc. skills? Surely we are no longer farm labourers and fishermen (well actually some of the best people on the Island are, and now have celebity status!) Are the comuters leaving their business heads on the train, why can't they use their talents for the good of Hayling |

My feeling is that we talk of Hayling as if it was a small village and want it to feel like a village, however its the size of a large town (in area) and lack a central focal point.
