West sussex has had part night lighting since the 70's majority of villages and B Roads switch of after midnight and then back on at around 4:30am

The whole wind turbine thing would have just cost way to much, eco power is still a luxury.

Why do you need an illuminated road if you got lights on yer car?
I used to walk over the bridge to work, morning and evening, before and after sunset. I would have needed to use a torch if there hadn't been any street lamps!! Especially with it being a shared footpath/cycle path, it would be dangerous for pedestrians without the lighting!!

In East Sussex they switch 'em off for parts of the A27 as well. Couple of winters ago I had to regularly ride from Lewes to Brighton at 4:30 on Sunday mornings - always streetlights on up to the edge of town and then pitch blackness until you hit Moulsecoomb.

Absolutely loved it, especially the bits where you get off the main stretch onto farmland back roads, and great for the astronomers too

Living in rural parts (Devon) for many years as I did, this makes oi larf. I drove for years in both Hampshire (the early days) and Devon with no street lights whatsoever. As the man said, that's what car lights are for. Also, in Devon except for the motorway (for some unknown reason) all street lights were switched off just after midnight - so peeps could see the stars!
Last night I was fishing at Eastoke until around 12.30 and it was quite wonderful to see the moonlit sea, etc., once most resids had switched off their lights and gone to bed. Only caught a couple of small bass but it was a lovely night except for the glare from the west caused by Pompey light pollution.
