Default doorstep selling

Yesterday a young lady (early 20's?), rang our bell. She said she was from Russia and had brought over some nesting dolls to sell.

I never buy from the door but as she walked away I wondered just what her circumstances were and if she was staying with a family on the Island.

Maybe a stall at one of the car boot sales would have been a better idea? Safer for her and I would then more than likely buy from her.

It was possibly the same young lady that was down Eaststoke area 2 weeks ago,

I must admit I also wondered what her circumstances were and why she was having to sell door to door, wonder where she has to replace her stock from?
is she being used as cheap labour?

A couple of weeks ago whilst at my parents I answered the door to a middle age woman who was selling sketches that she said she had drawn. She explained that she was from Poland or somewhere, and had to seel things over here to send back to her family so that they could live. I politely turned her down, not knowing whether or not she was genuine.. but it does make you wonder..

Do not be fooled by these people. A genuine doorstep seller will have a hawkers licence and will show it similarly "charity" sellers will show there credentials. A few years ago I was fooled by a "jolly", apparently African lady selling African violets at an inflated price for an "African" orphanage. She did so well that the police caught up with her and she gaolled for false pretences after it was demonstrated that she had an £80,000 per annum life style.

If anybody would like a Hampshire Trading Standards sticker for their house to the effect that you do not purchase goods or services at the door, I will get some to distribute. About half of the 80 houses in my NW scheme now have them showing. They are particularly good for vulnerable people.
Just let me know so that can gauge any demand.

Sounds like a good idea. Our philosophy, both at home and work is:
* Never deal with companies who spam
* Never buy from junk mail
* Never buy as the result of a telesales
* Never buy from cold callers
NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE DEAL SOUNDS

Can't say I ever really get cold callers though. Maybe the double glazing salesman swinging from homemade gallows in the front garden puts them off.
