The pre-electric ones, c1890 were better - they were manually operated by a single foot pedal (a bit like an harmonium) with a very long suction pipe, so, there was no need to lug the whole machine everywhere.
Rather labour intensive as they were two man (or woman) operated, but - very 'green'!

That's right Puddy - they were dual-pupose. If the fire needed lighting in the Baronial Hall, one just turned the machine so the exhaust blew onto the base of the hearth at the same time as the far-side of the room was being cleaned - cool!
