I am more than a little bemused; I have driven West Lane hundreds of times both in my youth and in the last ten years since I returned here. I have always had front wheel drive cars and I have always "done" West Lane, as you might expect, between 30 and 40 mph because irrespective of legal limits, those speeds seem naturally comfortable to me. Never have my cars given any indication of doing the strange/dangerous things that have been alluded to in this thread. Now it may be that I have considerably more experience than some of such roads both in rural Hampshire and Devon. In which case may I offer (perhaps somewhat arrogantly) advice to the less experienced:
Just take it easy when driving roads like West Lane and neither you nor your car will get hurt irrespective of how bad the surface may be. Driving quickly along West Lane will only save you a few seconds off your journey anyway (note to young woman who past me a few weeks ago doing something over 50mph)

Not on my part. I don't need to prove to anyone how big my private bits are, or are not come to that.
![]() I just can't stand bullying behaviour or people who try to make themselves look better by be-littling others, there is no need for it.

Stop worrying about stuff Paul and you soon will, however I have to admit that it took me a few years to learn not to. Fortunately I had a few mentors in my life who showed me the way.

I agree with Eccles, West Lane is safely covered at 40mph in that zone whether it is wet or dry; there is no need for any further traffic calming measures as drivers can very clearly and easily see the road design limits safe driving at excess speed.
The southern end is safe at no more than 30mph? Tried walking along there with cars about? It's quite dangerous and extra diligence is needed by drivers and pedestrians. |

I use a map for the US that marks roads that arent paved, go through Indian reservations, almost end up in Mexico. It doesnt stop me trying to find new interesting rides out and there is barely a road left in San Diego County that I havent ventured down.
One of my favourites is near an Indian Reservation and casino called Santa Ysabel to an area called Mesa Grande which feels like driving in England. It isnt local but is worth the trek when I am longing for the Meon valley/South Downs and there is a great bakery called Dudleys Bakery famous for its date nut bread and sourdough varieties. |
