How I wish I could take those who don't wish to be reminded of past wars to
Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial museum in Israel.

I have been twice, everything I have seen there reinforces my belief that future
generations must learn from the mistakes of the past.
Walk the "Avenue of the Righteous" and then tell me to forget!

Only my opinion of course!

I personally don't think we should forget, but I don't think it will make any difference to whether wars happen or not. Think about the terrible battles that went on before the WW1&2, and the wars that are continuing now. My father fought in BURMA and I had an uncle who was a prisoner of war. My Grandfather was awarded a DCM because of his bravery in the first WW. It is my belief that politicians will still "get greedy" and wars will continue.

Not talking about it is a classic sign of a traumatic stress reaction. Looking after people properly is another reason for everyone remembering, and not pretending it didn't happen because it makes them feel awkward or angry.

We understand the mental health issues better now because we remember that we didn't get it right in the past.

It's also about honouring those who gave their lives so that the rest could be free.

Your freedom to whine about remembering our service personnel was bought with their blood.

Generations of politicians? YES! Also generations of brave young men all too willing to take the King's shilling for a chance to to prove their manhood, cheered on their way by those for whom war is but a storybook fantasy, or an image on a television or cinema screen. Amidst gung ho stories of selfless heroism, amplified to patriotic effect to sell ever more copies of the Supa Soaraway Daily Blod!

Indeed. Some things NEVER change.

Were it not for brave men like the COPPists (and of course many others) people like Eccles would not be free to make the sort of nauseating, silly comments that they do.

Eccles, a little bit of gratitude might not come amiss.

If you don't agree with it don't go there .
It will be all that we have very soon to remember these brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice so they you can live as you do now.

Can I explain why I link Yad Vashem with our new COPP memorial?

I have had a PM from a person whose opinion I respect, which deserves an answer.
As there are two similar threads, I may have put something of this sort on the other
one

Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Israel, commemorates the Holocaust
and is not a war memorial.
But, this is how I feel:- Were it not for our brave servicemen and women of all three
services, Nazi Germany would not have been beaten and their extermination of the
Jews, Roman Catholics, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses and Physically / Mentally Handicapped would have continued unchecked.

I of course accept that WW2 was primarily about the invasion of other countries and
not about the Holocaust. I am just so grateful that by fighting the Nazi's both aims
were achieved. It is to the shame of many countries that the Holocaust was ignored/
denied until the last moment.

As a proud member of The Royal British Legion, I support our troops by honouring the
memory of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice and raising money for those who
survived.
