Actually you spooked me a bit (had to check the access light on our in office camera). When you posted that I had just been looking at this:

OK - just for reference...

If we had the time/money I'd be aiming to have the functionality of the Exmouth cam ( http://www.exmouthcam.co.uk/webcam.htm ) ...

.. the framerate of something like this one id edinburgh (http://camvista1.camstreams.com/)

.. but with the clarity we have when ours is working well.

Wrap all that up in a better interface and have someone else pay of it and I would be a happy bunny.

Would like something like this, but can't justify it without spending 3 months buttering up sponsors:

Fair point , just I've never found a windoze machine that can keep running for longer than a month without it doing something stupid

How much is that cam !!!!!!!

Love the exmouth cam, very similar to the tremblant cams in canada HERE

They dont auto refresh but are movable and zoom able

As you say its all down to money and if I had some spare I'd certianly sponsor it

Agreed with Windows/Unix here too - there's a reason all of our servers run unix variants. We had a windows based system for the first incarnation of the surfcam and we were rebooting almost daily. Things have improved though.

That was a cheap camera!! What are you on about! Our current set-up cost more than that one!

Really tempted to try to put together a cheap windows box and run a test. Anyone want to form an afterschool club?

We too, I'm running Win2000 pro on a laptop with no other applications 24/7 and it crashes on average once a week. Sometimes it will last 2-3 weeks, sometimes 2-3 days. Love to use Linusx but it has to be windoze because my X-10 software in windoze.

After-school club to re-boot the server each day - no thanks!

Well bung linux on another machine and have a play, you dont need anything half as flash to run linux, mine runs on an old P3 500 and its quite happy, then use VNC to get a desktop up on another machine or go in at command line level with a program called Putty.
The linux box dosnt have a screen or keyboard on it, its just a box with a network cable plugged into the network, everything else is done remotely once its set up

I'm nothing like proficiant on it and many time have to "phone a friend" to bail me out of the doo doo. He even fixes it remotely for me when I've messed things up

I dont think Mat actually wants us to have to go down to Carls and kick it I think the after school club is more for playing with "stuff" and seeing if we could get stuff running reliabley

I am LOVING watching Edinburgh

I used to walk along that very street every morning past the Castle to get to work on Princes Street and it's lovely taking a virtual trip down memory lane as it is a beautiful place. I was even filmed for Sky News once live It's particularly spectacular all lit up with the big wheel and all the decorations. Awww....lovely....thanks Mat

So, what kind of money are we talking about Mat - would £3 - £5 from each of us do the business?
Another comment: Like many who already know, I think MS Windows is an appalling piece of overloaded junk, trouble is so many folk use it. I started on a BBC Micro years ago and even in those days it had an OS which made the MS system look snail-like. Sadly Acorn Computers could not find enough financial backers to continue. I expect to follow the Chinese Government's lead shortly and swap over to Linux. I know that I will have to go through a learning curve but I am just totally fed- up with MS - I bet the new vista system has even more difficulties and needs even more RAM than XP.
