Jet Skiing

Although Hayling has many slipways that could potentially host the launching of Personal Watercraft, by far the safest and most suitable is the large slipway located by the Ferry Boat Inn on the western tip of the Island.

Personal Watercraft can be launched from the Ferry point all year round and the slipway can be used at all states of tide, although as an alternative, if you have a 4x4 you can access the beach from the slipway to launch and recover.

The Slipway is controlled and owned by the Langstone Harbour Board and any person launching from the slipway will have to pay harbour dues and launch fees. In addition a Jet Ski permit is required for users of Personal Watercraft, which is to be purchased prior to launching. This process is administered by the Langstone Harbour Master, whose office is based next to the slipway. The Langstone Harbour Master will issue a plaque and this must be displayed on the Personal Watercraft to which it was issued.

Hayling Island Personal Watercraft Club

There is a Personal Watercraft club that operates from the area, which is set up to enable like minded people enjoy and promote the sport. It is always safer to “buddy up” and joining a club is one of the best ways to enable this and for users to achieve more from their Personal watercraft. In addition Club members benefit from a reduced Jetski permit so it is well worth contacting the club prior to purchasing a daily or annual permit.

The Hayling Island PWC Club, is a Personal Watercraft club which aims to:

  • Promote and protect our sport by encouraging responsible behaviour and adherence to local bylaws.
  • Provide a club that allows its members to enjoy their sport with other like minded people on and off the water.
  • Provide a focal point for the local community to enable wider awareness of the sport.

The club works very closely with the Langstone Harbour Master who is the regulatory authority in Langstone Harbour. If an on-water breach of the bylaws is witnessed by the Langstone Harbour Master you may be prosecuted with very heavy fines - you have been warned!

The club can be contacted by e-mail info@hipwc.co.uk or please visit our website on www.hipwc.co.uk, where the club will be pleased to give you any advice.

Operation of Personal Watercraft at speed is not allowed within the Harbour, the Jetski permit only allows Personal Watercraft to transit “the run” to gain access to the Solent at a maximum of 10 knots.

The run can become very rough especially during the ebb and flood tides and the speed of the tide within the run can become very fast, so operation of Personal watercraft is not recommended by unaccompanied riders in case of capsize or breakdown.

Also beach fishermen use the area, so please respect their space and keep a wide berth of all their lines and their potential casting area. Any foreign object caught in a Personal Watercraft jet pump could potentially have a costly outcome or place the user in a dangerous situation in case of loss of power.

Once Personal Watercraft have exited Langstone Harbour and turn right,
they are now in waters controlled by the Dockyard Port of Portsmoth.
A License is required for Jet-Skiing in this area, if within half a nautical mile from
mean low water springs. The License is currently free of charge and can be
applied for online at www.qhmportsmouth.com There is a specific area for
Personal Watercraft to operate at speed, where a license is not required
set up just south of Eastney Beach, South West of the Langstone
Harbour Entrance and is marked by Six yellow buoys.
Personal Watercraft can operate a high speed in this area subject to collision regulations
with other craft transiting the area. Jetskis operating in this area do
not enjoy any special priority over other craft, so please be considerate
to other water users.
