Back to Paris We Go !
- Fri 23rd Aug 2002
After a two-year fling with the lovely Versailles, we are returning to our real love, Paris! This is one of the main changes planned for Ride 2003, the main decisions already having been agreed for next year's event. The 5-Day ride for keen cyclists is being retained, with an afternoon sailing to Cherbourg, rather than overnight, allowing the opportunity for a more restful night in a Cherbourg hotel, before the long day to Caen. However, the main change to the event is that once more we are concentrating our efforts on and promotion of the basic ride for newcomers and less experienced cyclists - but with a difference. Having decided to drop the 4-Day ride, we are extending the main event to three days, which should accommodate the wishes of some for a longer ride, but also offering newcomers a slightly greater challenge... Those on the 3-Day ride will go by coach overnight, to meet up with the 5-Dayers in Evreux and cycle in to Paris together. All riders will thus have the opportunity to meet everyone sooner, with the 3-Dayers being given the opportunity to have a shortish ride on the first day, to test out their cycling legs. The final day from Rouen to Le Havre is to be shortened to around 65 miles, so that everyone gets in sooner, to make the most of the last night in Le Havre. Distances will now be about 205 miles for the 3-Day and 400 miles for the 5-Day. The return on a Saturday was judged to be a success and so provisional dates for 2003 are Tuesday 8th July to Saturday 12th July, with the 5-Dayers going out on Sunday 6th July. So start thinking about next year now!
ANNUAL REUNION
We hope to have a record number of riders and supporters attending our Reunion in October. All the awards have now been engraved and brought up to date for re-presentation and we hope that previous winners will be able to attend to make it a special event. The Group Award could have a photo of 50 riders past and present! We are returning to the Newtown House Hotel for this event, which is to be on Saturday, 26th October. All riders past, present and future are welcome, as are our local supporters. We hope that most riders will be able to hand over their sponsorship on this evening, if not already sent in. The water bottles should also be ready and orders can be taken for more road jerseys. For Fred Dyers sake, we hope he has completed most of his record fundraising efforts!
