Hayling Scarecrows Move Into The Digital Age

- Wed 28th Jul 2010

The annual Hayling Island Scarecrow Festival starts at 9am on Saturday 31st July and runs for TWO WEEKS. This event attracts thousands of visitors each year who take the Scarecrow Trail to find the figures made by Islanders – it’s one of the biggest scarecrow festivals in the UK and great family fun.

This is the fourth year of this popular event in which Hayling Island residents and businesses build hundreds of figures and display them all around the Island. Visitors and Residents will once again be able to buy Scarecrow Trail Sheets from 9am on Saturday 31st for just 25p and use them to Spot The Scarecrows.

Trail sheets will be available from:

• The Hayling Island Bookshop, Mengham Village
• Terracotta Pot Shop, Eastoke Corner
• Relatively Crafty, Gable Head
• Hayling Library, Elm Grove
• Paige’s Fishing Tackle, West Town
• J & K Supermarket, Creek Road
• Stoke Fruit Farm, Stoke
• Tourist Information Office, Central Beachlands

This year our straw citizens have taken some steps to join the digital community

• Text voting has been introduced to help elect The People’s Choice most popular Scarecrow. This is in addition to the ballot sheets and ballot boxes scattered around the Island for people to register their votes. Details of text voting are in the Trail Sheet.
• “Hayling Billy” the name of the Festival scarecrow logo has his own page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/billythescarecrow

This year up to 200 scarecrow figures are expected to be on display and competing in the following categories. They will all be viewed by independent judges on Sunday 1st August –

• Best Scarecrow by a Retailer
• Best Scarecrow by a Business
• Best Scarecrow by an Organisation (non commercial)
• Best Privately Entered Scarecrow
• Best Privately Entered Group of Scarecrows

The winners will be announced at The Hayling Carnival on the afternoon of 7th August at the Carnival Field, Beachlands and the awards will be presented by the Mayor of Havant.

The Trail Sheet Draw winner will be announced at Playing On The Plaza on 30th August.
