Bank Holiday Monday Launch for New Plaza Bandstand!
- Mon 23rd Aug 2010
Bank Holiday Monday the 30th August between 1pm and 5pm a will see a bumper FOUR HOUR bonanza of of FREE live music on Hayling Island’s popular Eastoke Corner Plaza.
Beginning with stirring music from the junior section of the Denmead Brass Band, while the enthusiastic young dancers of Island Dance Fusion will be providing our interval act. After which further music will follow from local pop and rock bands Strawberry Blonde, who have recently played at the Northney Village hall fund raiser, and Revival featuring our very own Plaza favourite Jack Cottle.
Many will recall the memorable occasion at one of the first ever ‘Playing on the Plaza’ gigs back in 2008, when after a last minute cancellation by the star act, a then 15 year old supporting artiste Jack stepped in at the last moment and performed the entire afternoon’s set single handed, much to the delight of an enthusiastic seaside crowd. A budding talent that has not gone unrecognised, as earlier this year his ability was richly rewarded, by winning a much coveted place at pop legend Paul McCartney’s prestigious Liverpool Academy.
Meanwhile Eastoke Corner and The Plaza itself have been a hive of construction and activity in recent weeks, with the completion of the colourful Adidas sponsored ‘Adizone’ fitness and activity centre, in honour ot the forthcoming 2012 Olympics. While the performance area itself has seen the re-siting of the rather unlovely electricity sub station which previously flanked the ‘stage’, and the building of a purpose built canopy to form an appropriately modern bandstand to provide shelter for our volunteer performers.
While this is sadly the final gig of our current season of ‘Playing on the Plaza’ concerts, plans are already well advanced for a further series of free live music gigs in 2011. However with the improved facilities currently being developed at Eastoke Corner by Havant Borough Council, in association with the Hayling Island Community Board and Hayling’s BEST, the potential now exists for a wide range of community groups and local performers to come forward, to provide an extended programme of innovative entertainment's to further enhance the Hayling Island experience.
Any such voluntary groups or organisations who would like to stage their own events, such as the popular 'Carols on the Plaza' Christmas event organised by the Hayling Churches Together group, are invited to contact ‘The Plaza Team’ at............
