Hayling cleans up at seaside awards

- Thu 17th Apr 2003

seaside awardsWest Beachlands Central, West Beachlands West and Eastoke beaches have all received the 2003 Seaside Award flag, meaning our beaches are ‘superbly managed’ boasting clean shores and supreme facilities.

David Archer, Beachlands Manager, says “We are delighted to have our efforts recognised by these annual awards and we are very proud of the success of our beaches. When the Seaside Awards began back in 1992, we were one of the 92 beaches that received a Resort Award flag and

we have won awards every year since.”Eastoke Beach for the 4th year running has received a ‘Rural’ Seaside Award flag. The main difference between a Resort and Rural award is that a rural beach does not have to have dog bans, first aid facilities, public telephones, toilets, drinking water, disabled facilities. However,

Eastoke beach has all the above facilities except a dog ban and a first aid facility.

ENCAMS (Environmental Campaigns Seaside Awards & Blue Flag Campaign) the organisers of these awards assessed the beaches by looking at the management attributes including the provision of first aid, clean toilets and ensuring access and facilities for the disabled. These were grouped into seven categories of access, beach cleanliness, water safety, control of dogs, facilities and amenities, maintenance and information.

Across the UK, an applaudable 332 beaches received Seaside Awards today- an all time record, compared with 317 last year.
