Hayling United 1 Farnborough North End 1

- Wed 13th Mar 2002

Hampshire League Division One, Saturday 9th March 2002. Match report from John Marchment courtesy of www.footballnews.co.ukFarnborough North End dropped two points in their drive for honours at Hayling Utd on Saturday on a hard and bumpy pitch. The wind was blowing a gale off the sea which was only a few hundred yards away and made good football very difficult to come by.

It was a game that was devoid of much goalmouth action. Top scorer Paul Griffiths donned the gloves due to the late withdrawal of Ben Meakings and he was not called to make a single save. The Hayling goal which was scored just after the hour was typical of the conditions. A poor clearance from Griffiths went to a Hayling player in the middle of the park some 45 yards from goal.

He despatched his wind assisted shot to see it go over Griffiths and hit the underside of the bar and into the net. With 15 minutes to go North End were awarded a freekick 20 yards out. Player Manager Paul Xiberras stepped up to take it and stroked the ball superbly into the top corner. Minutes later Chris Miles had an excellent one-on-one chance to put the game beyond all doubt but the keeper smothered his weak effort.

Thirty goal Griffiths' goal scoring touch was missed badly in this game which saw their rivals Colden Common and AFC Portchester, both win and strengthen their positions at the top.

Tomorrow (Sat) FNE travel to top of the table side AFC Portchester who will be out to avange their 6-3 defeat at Farnborough Gate in December. North End hope to welcome back keeper Ben Meakings, defender Simon Treadwell and midfielder Joel Matthews for this match.
