Stay of Execution For Kitesurfers
- Fri 25th Jul 2003
Council plans to ban kitesurfing from the Island's beaches have been put on hold for the duration of the summer as the outcome of a meeting on Wednesday.
Havant Borough Council have been recently airing plans for a by-law to make the activity illegal on any stretch of Hayling Island's award-winning coastline. The proposed ban has gained much press attention and been strongly discussed both locally and nationally amogst followers of the sport.Self regulation, in the form of a system of cololur-coded flags will be used to ensure safety this summer, with many eyes no doubt watching to see the success of the scheme.
The decision on whether to pursue the band has now been referred back to HBC's licensing committee. This means that plans to request a bylaw banning the sport are unlikely to be officially discussed again until the end of the summer.
Hayling Island councillor Gordon Erlebach said: 'We can see they're trying.'
