The flags are out

- Thu 14th Mar 2002

Hayling's beaches have again been commended with the release of this year's 'blue flag' and 'yellow flag' Seaside awards. Central Beachlands, West Beachlands and Eastoke were three of just 317 beaches given the awards for 2002...
The awards are based on factors such as cleanliness, disabled access, first aid provision, dog control, facilities, maintenance and information, with strict criteria being set for each. When first launched in 1992 only 92 beaches met these criteria but numbers have steadily increased year on year since. Despite rising standards and this year's record number of awards, Hayling Island still boasts the only beaches in Hampshire to display both flags.

Environmental charity ENCAMS, organisers of the awards, is making an impassioned plea to the public to start backing beaches by visiting and promoting them. Alan Woods, chief executive of ENCAMS, said: "Tourism is one of the largest industries in the UK and is worth approximately £75 billion a year. It also employs over two million people.

"By visiting one of our award-winning beaches this summer, you will be helping to keep that industry and many local economies afloat.

Congratulations must go to Dave Archer and the rest of the Beachlands team for their work done to ensure that our beaches remain among the country's best.
