ROLL UP FOR THE HAYLING 13 FUN BIKE RIDE!

- Tue 3rd Feb 2004

Leap Year Day, Sunday 29th February 2004, is to be celebrated with a family fun ride around the Island, organised by the Paris to Hayling bike ride, as the first in this year’s practice rides, leading up to the main event, in July. This event is to commence at the Yew Tree pub at 10.30am prompt and takes a 13-mile route around the Island, finishing at the Maypole at about 1pm. The ride is aimed at families, encouraging mum and dad to ride at their leisure, with sons and daughters of all ages. As you may appreciate, it is not a race and although route notes will be provided at the official start, there will be many directional arrows placed at suitable points along the route, so that you can’t get lost, even if you try! Participants are welcome to join or leave the route at any point convenient to themselves. As an incentive to complete the route, a certificate of completion will be provided at the official finishing point, along with various other goodies, to make the day a memorable one.

Some Island groups have already expressed an interest in using the event as a fundraiser for their clubs etc and so sponsorship forms are being printed for this purpose. These can be collected from Kezzmas Cyber Emporium, Elm Grove (tel 023-9246-2679), or from bike ride committee members, should you wish to raise funds for a good cause.

The organisers of the bike ride will not be involved in the collection of any money, but will be providing official entry forms at the Yew Tree on the day, should you wish to take part (riders under the age of 18 will need written parental consent). Official marshals will be patrolling the route, just to keep an eye on things, as the ride progresses. It is important to point out that the bike ride organisers and marshals cannot take responsibility for the safety of participants, but will do everything in their power to ensure that the day goes without incident.

We hope that many of you will join in this fun day, giving you the opportunity to meet fellow riders, see our Island at a leisurely pace, as well as getting a bit of exercise! This may even encourage some to undertake the greater challenge of doing the Paris to Hayling, but if you can’t then you may be encouraged to take part in our programme of practice rides in the beautiful countryside of Hampshire and West Sussex.
