Body Washed up at Beachlands

- Tue 22nd Jun 2004

Yesterday about 10am, a couple walking a dog discovered a partially decomposed body on the beach behind the funfair. The body, although in a poor condition due to the affects of the sea water, is thought to be that of a male aged between 20 and 40 years. The local CID representative of Waterlooville, D.S. Nigel Midgley, said that the police had not ruled out anything at this stage. Perhaps natural causes or even murder is possible.

He said " A post mortem will be performed within the next few days to discover how this person died. As we do not know, no conclusions have been made"

They have denied that the body is that of 24 years old, Lee Hollis of Havant.

A local kitchen worker in the Beachlands Cafe, Nick Gorrod, said "It looked like he had been in the water for some time - I could see he was a large man, about 6ft tall. It is shocking to have this sort of thing happen around here"

Apparently, a large crowd of rubber neckers, gathered as the police removed the body. "Some were even taking photographs" Nick added.

Car park attendant, Mark Snarey also said "I saw the police fishing a big looking bloke out of the water, You certainly do not expect things like this to happen on Hayling, perhaps he fell overboard from a ship"
