Havant Police State the Obvious

- Mon 26th Jul 2004

Havant police are today (July 22) advising all members of the public in Havant, Waterlooville and Hayling Island to remember to close their windows and doors when they go out over the summer.
With the hot weather comes the temptation to leave windows open in order to keep properties cool. But this innocent action could result in opportunist thefts. Burglary, theft and robbery are rare crimes but it is important people don’t make criminals’ lives easier by literally providing them with an open door. It is suggested that if you are going out, or going on holiday, over the summer months that you secure all window latches and door locks so that opportunist thieves are persuaded otherwise.

Havant police wish to emphasise that the majority of burglaries committed over the summer months could be prevented if doors and windows were locked. Most thefts from homes, sheds or garages are committed by opportunist thieves trying their luck so members of the public should not in any way think that there will be a rise of burglaries over the summer.

Superintendent Mark Chatterton said: “Public vigilance concerning their property and its security is something we need to remind people of over the summer months. Just getting into a routine of checking windows and locking doors when you go out can help deter would-be thieves.”
