UPDATE _ Hayling Flats fire

Two people have died in a suspicious fire at a block of flats in Hayling Island.
Police were called to the blaze at Darra Court, on Seafront Road, shortly after 8pm yesterday (August 22).

The two dead people, both male, were found at the address by firefighters.

Other residents of the block were successfully evacuated.

Neither of those who died has yet been identified.

A Home Office pathologist is to carry out post mortem examinations on both deceased and the scene of the blaze will also be subject to a full forensic examination.

Two people were arrested later yesterday evening in connection with the fire. Both are currently being interviewed.

Last Sunday evening/night, 2 people were killed by fires caused by an attempt to by-pass electric supply meters in premises on the Crescent.

The victims, who have not been identified, were found in the top floor flat of Darra Court, Seafront Road, Hayling Island, Hants last night.

A Hampshire Fire and rescue spokesman said 25 firefighters were needed to bring the blaze under control at the four storey building, which was badly damaged in the fire. Firemen then found the bodies of the men in the flat.

Post mortem examinations will be carried out later, he added.

Other residents in the block of flats was evacuated and the local authority were called in to help re-house those that could not stay with friends. No one was injured.

Police have arrested two person in connection with this terrible action.
