HAYLING CLAMPING VICTIM

A Hayling Islander was subject to a ruthless clamping incident in late July. He was putting up signs for a community event and briefly stopped in the car park of the former Buccaneer pub, as he had done a number of times in the past. However, the new owner of the site had employed a firm of clampers to prey upon unwitting motorists. The Islander didn’t even leave the car and was about to drive away when a clamping vehicle pulled up and blocked his path. He was then informed that he was going to be clamped and would have to pay a substantial fee on the spot to get unclamped. An unsavoury wrangle then ensued, with both sides arguing vigorously and there was some physical contact. Under great pressure and with much-aggrieved ill-feeling, the fee was paid and the Islander drove away (over the clamper’s foot it appears!). The victim’s friends sympathise greatly with his plight and have offered to club together to pay the £135 fine. Should this form of licensed thuggery and legalised theft be tolerated on our Island?
