Hayling Island - The 6 Strategic Liveability Projects.

1. Improvements to Eastoke Corner (as recommended by consultants) Re-align road Pedestrianise area Landscape the area
2. Gateway Improvements: North Hayling (south of bridge) including better walking access to Northney Common Create rural path along south side of Northney Road towards hotel and south from there (requires a small bridge over drainage ditch and request by farmers to move their fence lines back from the road) Create small rural car park by the old Hayling Road west of Havant Road Art work just to the north of the petrol station (eg. windsurfer sculpture) Re-paint old lampposts the same colour (dark blue) as the new bridge lampposts Re-paint old railings as the same colour (white) as the new railings on bridge Replace the existing 'Welcome to Hayling Island' sign with a new one Lower the hedge line on west side of Havant Road
3. Improvements to promenade, central Beachlands, Royal Shades to Beachlands Improve the bathing area add more sand between sea defences Retain existing picnic area with improvements eg brick built BBQ, new seating, steps down from car park and possible disabled access. More greenery palm trees, floral displays Seafront Road - new footpath surface and existing grass verge made into a cycle lane. Green gym along sea front Make Beachlands visitors centre more comprehensive Sort out dangerous corner by Sinah Farm (two derelict houses on north side of road) Better access for wheelchairs, prams and pushchairs
4. Layout and streetscape improvements to Elm Grove/Mengham Corridor to Gable Head (as recommended by consultants) Better signage New streetscaping and open space improvements to improve and integrate north and south parts of Elm Grove Traffic calming/better traffic flow scheme
5. Adding a walking/cycling bridge alongside existing bridge Will encourage more walkers and cyclists (more day trip tourism) to the island Safer that cycling on main road
6. Improve 2 roundabouts Manor Road/Corner Road and Beachlands roundabouts Both are concrete and unattractive Would like to see grass/flowers on each with more attractive signs
Non-liveability project that Board would like to bring to the attention of the Council The board believe there is a need for some kind of pedestrian crossing at Stoke. People on the east side of the road find it difficult to cross to the post office and shop on the west side of the road. Particularly older people. Traffic flow and speeds are too high. There is the risk of accidents. The Board would like Highways to investigate.
