PARIS TO HAYLING RIDE 2005 NEARING CAPACITY

- Mon 24th Jan 2005

We have received an unprecedented number of entries for the 20th Ride at this stage of planning and so if you want to join us, please get your entry in now!

Mary Burras
Followers of Bike Ride history will know that the event was started by Pete McQuade in 1986. He was helping to raise money for research into cot deaths, following the death of Louise Burras, one of the twin daughters of friends, raising £1500. The next year he asked if others wanted to join him and 18 of us did, followed by 42 in 1988 and we’ve gone on from there. The surviving twin, Mary, will this year be 20 and is now on a 10-week programme in the Bahamas, diving and surveying the coral reefs, for which she had to raise all the funding. Once again, family and friends have helped with the fundraising and the Paris to Hayling’s charitable wing, ACE, has also contributed, to help one of the symbols of the bike ride.

The Hayling 13
Practice rides for this year’s start with the Hayling 13 on Sunday, 27th February, which we hope to make an even more popular event than the first one, on Leap Year Day last year. You will find details about this ride for all the family elsewhere in this issue of the Islander

Channel to Channel Ride
Plans are also well advanced for the 6th Channel to Channel Ride (14th/15th May) - the ideal preparation for those planning to do the Paris to Hayling or an alternative for those who cannot make the July ride. Entry forms are available on our web site or via Pete McQuade (07900600167 or mcquadep@aol.com)

Details for Ride 2005
The 5-Day 418 mile ride goes out in the afternoon of Sunday 10th July, from Portsmouth to Cherbourg and the 3-Day 228 mile ride overnight on Tuesday 12th July, from Portsmouth to Le Havre. We shall all be in Rouen on Bastille Day, 14th July, and return on Saturday, 16th July, from Le Havre, arriving on Hayling in mid-afternoon. Entry fees are £345 for the 5-Day and £245 for the 3-Day, with a deposit of £150 being required to secure a place. These fees have now been fixed, even though we have not yet completed our negotiations with the ferry companies.
