Local girl has cure for the Winter Blues!
- Thu 3rd Mar 2005
Feeling SAD? Bored of quiet nights in? Want to inject a bit of excitement into your week? Why not have fun at a quiz night that will also make a difference to lives of children in a deprived corner of Africa.
Local teacher, Lana Driscoll, 23, is travelling to Accra, Ghana for two weeks at the end of June, as one of a group of teachers who want to use their experience to improve the education of children from deprived countries. As with all volunteer expeditions, Lana needs to raise funds to cover flights and basic living expenses.
Lana has been teaching at Meadowlands Junior School in Waterlooville for almost three years. During her time there she has worked on projects developing the curriculum and different teaching methods, knowledge which she intends to now put to use at Gertrude Memorial School in Ghana.
Gertrude Memorial is a mixed sex school for pupils between 6 and 12, in a deprived area of Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Classrooms are crammed into 2 small buildings with dirt floors, corrugated iron roofs, wooden benches and a few desks. The only facilities the school has are a few books for the teachers and a chalk board and current teaching methods are similar to those used in this country in Victorian times. The school has asked for help in providing a more interactive education for their pupils.
On the 21st of March, starting at 7pm, The Lifeboat Inn is hosting a quiz night to raise money for Lana’s trip. Entry is £5 per person which includes a hot fork buffet, donated by Cottage Cuisine Charity Events and a bottle of bubbly for the winning team! Tickets can be bought from CJ Driscoll Chartered Accountants in Mengham or The Lifeboat Inn where any donations of raffle prizes would be gratefully received.
So why not beat the winter blues on the 21st of March and join Lana for giggle in aid of Ghana.
