Bomb scare on island (LATEST) Update Saturday AM
- Fri 29th Jul 2005
We are receiving patchy reports that police are currently attending the scene of a suspicous vehicle on Beach Road. Residents of some twenty households as well as patrons of the Barley Mow have reportedly been evacuated amid fears of a possible explosion. Parts of Manor Road and Beach Road have also reportedly been cordoned off from traffic and pedestrians.
The source of concerns appears to be an apparently abandoned BMW car. According to one eye witness, the car has been left untaxed on the road-side for some time without previously warranting any police attention.
This story will continue to be updated as more facts come to light.
Addition 22:00: The suspect vehicle, a maroon BMW was rendered safe in a controlled explosion after a Royal Navy bomb disposal team attended the scene. A police spokesman said that this was done as a "precaution". Residents have now been allowed to return to their houses and the road re-opened.
A 200-metre cordon was put in place around the scene on Manor Road, and the bomb team was called in. It was declared safe at about 2200 BST.
Hampshire Police now say they believe it was a false alarm.
LATEST UPDATE:
'Propane bottle'
Eyewitness Tom Lincoln said: "The bomb squad turned up and got their little robot out.
"The robot went off down the road to the car, had a poke about for a bit and shot twice at the boot then came back."
A man in full body armour then approached the car, he said.
"He had a look about and then came back for an explosive device of some kind; he put it under the car and returned to the van.
"We waited for a bit and then bang, a bit of something rolled up the road.
"We saw something that looked like a propane bottle in the boot. He closed it all up, took his hat off and that was about it," he added.
So that's is the Hayling Bomb saga! Another false alarm.
