In response to public concern over the proposed design of the parapets for Langstone Bridge a
public meeting has been organised for Thursday18 April. For those unable to attend this meeting
or to see the proposals beforehand a mobile roadshow will tour Hayling Island Monday to Thursday
next week (15,16,17 and 18 April). An example of the proposed parapet, which is part of an overall £1.3 million major maintenance
scheme for the bridge, is currently on display at the contractor’s site office. At the public meeting
and County Council exhibitions further details will be available on why this particular design is the
County’s preferred option. The main issue facing the County Council is the fear from local
residents that the parapets will block the views of Langstone Harbour which are some of the most
attractive in the area.
“My concern is that this mobile roadshow and public meeting does not just become a case of
selling the County’s preferred option. I am keen that the residents of Hayling Island have the
opportunity to express their opinions and I shall do all I can to support their views – in both senses
of the word!” says Councillor David Gillett, Leader of Havant Borough Council.
The public meeting next Thursday will take place at 7.00pm in the United Reformed Church,
Hollow Lane, Mengham and will be chaired by the Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor
Ken Thornber. The mobile exhibition will visit the various locations on Hayling Island between 9am
and 7.30pm (Schedule attached).
Councillor Thornber says of the parapets “ Although slightly higher than those they replace so that
cyclists can use the footways, the new parapets are definitely not solid. People will still be able to
enjoy the same wonderful views as they make their way across this bridge”.
