BIKE RIDE NEWS - DECEMBER 2005 - Again!

- Fri 2nd Dec 2005

I have re-released this news item at the request of Paul Fisher as the flood warning took precedence.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2006

Plans are now well under way for next year's event and the essential recces are now going ahead, with the first one being undertaken by Paul Fisher and Pascal Pichon, Pascal flying them to Dieppe for the day in his private four-seater, in late October - a hair-raising experience for the Chairman! A further visit took place in late November, covering the whole route from Le Havre, via Evreux, Chartres, Paris, Rouen and back to Dieppe, checking arrangements for ferries, hotels and waystops. A route recce is planned for early in the New Year.

AGM
The annual general meeting of the bike ride and ACE, took place on Thursday 3rd November, at the Newtown. The usual reports were made and committee elections were held. The committee is now composed of Paul Fisher (Chairman); Lynne Harris (Secretary); Will Barnard (Treasurer); Pete Alloway (Vice-Chairman); Tony Hart (Vice-Chairman); Rick Hutchings; Reg Beacher; Meryl Browne; Phil Benton; Maryon McQuade; Pascal Pichon; Sarah Farmer, Fred Dyer and Jon Tawse. Leigh Hunter and Jenny Phelps stood down, due to other commitments, but will continue to help with the preparations for next year. Kev Crocker will remain as a consultant to the committee on support matters. President Peter McQuade is a life committee member and, as such, is not subject to re-election.

SPONSORSHIP
Sponsorship pledges from cyclists taking part in this year's event now exceed an amazing £105,000, with over £70,000 already collected!

SANTAS ARE GO!
Yes, it's that time of the year again, meaning that we are looking forward to a jolly day's cycling on Sunday, 18th December. We always have a great time just before Christmas, when we dress up as Father or Mother Christmas and go cycling in and around Hampshire and West Sussex, visiting welcoming hostelries and imparting seasonal cheer. Last year there were over 40 red-clad riders and so we hope for a similar, if not larger, turnout this year. We shall be assembling at The Ship for breakfast at about 10.30, visiting the Barley Mow at Walderton and returning to the Ship after the ride, before continuing on our merry way.

RIDE VIDEO 2005
We plan to show this on the Father Christmas ride on Sunday, 18th December, so please try to make sure that you join us.

PRACTICE RIDES
Since these have been so popular in the lead up to the main event in July, we now continue them through the autumn and winter months, although not as intensive, of course. The schedule can be found on the website below. The majority of riders who are local to Hayling find them very useful, but don't wish them to be too long, preferring a mid-morning start and a break for lunch, where the family have the opportunity to join them. They start with the Hayling 13 on Sunday, 27th February

CHANNEL TO CHANNEL RIDE
Plans are also well advanced for the 7th Channel to Channel Ride (13th/14th May) - the ideal preparation for those planning to do the Paris to Hayling or an alternative for those who cannot make the July ride. This year we are cycling from Weymouth to Salisbury, rather than from Weston-Super-Mare. Entry forms are available on our web site or via Pete McQuade (07900600167 or mcquadep@aol.com

RESERVATION FORMS FOR THE 21st RIDE 2006
Reservation forms are now out, so that riders can book their place, with a £75 reservation fee. So book your place now! New entry forms will be available later in the year, once ferry prices have been resolved - indications are that we will not need to increase the price from this year.
