£108,000 RAISED THROUGH 20th PARIS TO HAYLING 2005

- Wed 5th Apr 2006

We are highly delighted to be able to confirm the above massive record-breaking figure of sponsorship raised by riders taking part in last year’s celebratory ride, at an average of over £500 per rider. To this may be added tax to be reclaimed by charities though Gift Aid, which could amount to over £10,000. Islander readers will also be aware that members of the Island community have also donated over £50,000 to the 70,000 Mile Appeal, for the recent purchase and installation of medical equipment for the Hayling Health Centre, via our new charity, ‘Hayling Ride Aid’. This takes the total raised through the Paris to Hayling and associated fundraising to over £825,000 and so the fabled £1,000,000 milestone is in sight!

NEW FORMAT FOR THE CHARITIES EVENING PROVES VERY POPULAR

The annual Charity Cheque Presentation Evening took place at Seacourt on Saturday 11th March, with a new, more informal, format. Over 60 representatives from the beneficiaries attended, with the number swelled to over 100, by riders and supporters, who were shown Councillor David Collins’s video of last year’s ride, following a short presentation by Paul Fisher and Peter McQuade, Chairman and President of the Ride, respectively. The charities were invited to pick up their cheques from a display and were treated to an informal buffet, which gave everyone the chance to ‘network’ and meet riders, as well as members of the organising committee. Meryl Browne and Lynne Harris were thanked for their work in organising the evening.

THIRD YEAR OF THE HAYLING 13

The third ‘Hayling 13’ Family Fun Ride took place on Sunday 12th March and heralded the beginning of the practice ride season, leading up to the 21st Paris to Hayling Charity Cycle Ride event in July. As you may appreciate, the route was pretty flat, as it is pretty difficult to find hills on Hayling and quite a few local families took part.

Practice Rides

This year’s practise rides started with the third Hayling 13 Family Fun Ride, as mentioned above, on 12th March. A series of weekly rides, appealing particularly to new riders, now gets under way. It is planned that these will be ‘social rides’, leading up to the main event, with country pubs  incorporated, so that new riders can get to know the veterans. Anyone can join in, with rides generally starting at 10.30 on Sunday mornings from the Ship at Langstone.

Channel to Channel

Another event, sometimes thought of as a ‘super practice ride’ is the Channel to Channel ride, organised by Peter McQuade. Now in its 7th year, this takes place on the weekend of Friday evening 12th to Sunday 14th May and involves cycling from Weymouth back to Hayling, via Salisbury. Please call Peter on 9246-3049 or e-mail: mcquadep@aol.com

Ride to Gorron

Fred Dyer has organised a three-day ride to our twin town of Gorron and back, which takes place between 20th and 23rd April, soon after the Easter visit of the Gorronais to Hayling. There might be places available, so should you wish to join in please call Fred on 9246-8796 or 07789-097355.

Details for Ride 2006

The 6-Day 420 mile ride goes out on the evening of Sunday 9th July from Portsmouth to Le Havre and the 3½-Day 250 mile ride overnight on Tuesday 11th July, also from Portsmouth to Le Havre. The 6-Day riders will visit Chichester’s twin city of Chartres and we shall all be in Dieppe on Bastille Day, 14th July, returning on Saturday, 15th July from Dieppe, arriving in Newhaven in late morning and making our way back to Hayling, via Littlehampton.  There will be more details about plans for the return home, as they are finalised. Entry fees are £330 for the 6-Day and £230 for the 3½-Day. Riders are expected to raise at least £150 for the charity of their choice, with entry fees and business support paying for the organisation of the event, allowing 100% of the sponsorship raised to be distributed to the nominated charities and deserving causes. The number of entries is already well over 140, with a planned maximum of 180, so it’s best to get your entry form in very soon!
