HAYLING ISLAND PLAYS HOST TO HERITAGE & TOURISM STUDENTS
- Tue 27th Jun 2006
The Hayling Island Market Town Initiative (MTI) will be host to a number of undergraduates from the University of Winchester’s Heritage and Tourism degree course, who will be working to carry out a heritage and tourism ‘health-check’ on the island.
Local volunteers who are already working on the main Hayling Island ‘health-check’ with project officer Sarah Snowden will assist the students, who will be staying on the Island from 26th-30th June.
During this time the team will be working together to investigate and audit the historic, cultural and heritage aspects and attractions that could be used to attract niche market visitors to the island.
The residential idea came from requests of the volunteers already working on the Market Town Initiative, who felt historic and heritage aspects of the Island were a relatively untapped resource and could be an avenue for tourism of the future.
Special workshop session have been set up by Tourism South East for the students and local volunteers. Also invited to be part of the project are representatives from local businesses and attractions.
Havant Borough Council’s Business Development Manager Tony Lee, says:
"This is an exciting time for the undergraduates to join us as we are working towards ‘Destination Hayling Island’. The Market Town Initiative project brings together the benefits of partnership working with Hampshire County Council, for the gains of Hayling Island’s tourism, local economy, businesses, & development".
Hampshire Market Towns Co-ordinator Anne Harrison, said "this week's visit will be an excellent example of how representatives from local business, the University of Winchester, Tourism South East, local government and from local communities can all benefit from each other's interest and involvement".
Anyone interested in finding out more about the residential visit or the Market Town Project should contact Sarah Snowden on 02392 446554 or email sarah.snowden@hants.gov.uk.
