Dangerous tides today
- Wed 19th Jul 2006
Warning signs have appeared on Hayling beach over-night highlighting dangers of particularly hazardous tides today.
The signs, posted at West Beach by Havant Borough Council read:
"Wednesday 19th July. The east winner sand bank can be dangerous. Low water today at 12.01pm. Come ashore at this time"
It is not yet know whether these signs have appeared as the result of a particular incident, in response to particularly hazardous predicted tides or as part of a general awareness campaign.
The East Winner bank though does pose a regular danger to those not familiar with the beach due to the great tidal range at this part of the beach. Tourists are frequently attracted out on to the sand bank by warm shallow waters and great swathes of sand not knowing that they risk getting cut off when the tide returns.
