2006 Raft Race

- Tue 15th Aug 2006

High winds forced a delayed start and a change of course for the annual Raft Race at The Ship Inn, Langstone. After dodging of water and flour bombs the start signal sounded and they were off, noise and spray from crews and paddles make it difficult to assess positions but at least three rafts are having difficulty due to the conditions and no doubt some flaws in raft design and will eventually fall prey to the ignominy of the safety craft.

New boy's on the block 'The Chuckle Brothers'" won this year's event, though they did not get round the course in the fastest time, this honour went to The Hula 'Girls' who were swept off at the start by wind and tide and towed round the course by the safety craft. Second raft in was the City Gents,

(Fullers, Smith & Turner) who were certainly the best-dressed crew in their city suits, followed by Hayling Joggers who due to high jinks at the start were waterlogged and a bit worse for wear. Hayling First Responders came fourth and seem to be a team to watch for next year. 14 teams entered, 10 made the start, 5 of these were from Hayling Island. Hayling First Responders won the Fancy Dress Competition dressed as tank crew with their raft as the tank. Event organisers John & Rita Delahunty report an increase in funds raised for the charities involved with Hayling Joggers once again likely to win the Champion Fundraiser title with over a £1000 already collected.

Super Heros and Grounded provided the music. Well done to all concerned for the spectacle.
