HARBOUR ART ON DISPLAY

- Thu 19th Oct 2006

An unusual display of art work is on display at Pallant House Gallery next week (25-31 October). The pieces were all submitted as part of the ‘Earth, Air & Water’ art event that was organised by the Gallery and Chichester Harbour Conservancy
During October, local schools were given the opportunity to work with professional artists. The pupils took inspiration for their work from Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Seven local schools including primary and secondary took part in the event. The schools were given the choice of working in photography, environmental art, sculpture or printmaking. Workshops in the same subjects were also held for the public.
Artwork done in harbour mud, clips of sound recordings, photography and stone sculptures are just some of the pieces of work now on show. The exhibition, which is open during half-term, is free of charge. Judi Darley, the organiser for Chichester Harbour said ‘the schools loved coming out into the harbour environment and being inspired by it all. Their creativity was channelled and challenged by being able to work with a professional artist’. Marc Steene of Pallant House Gallery called the exhibition ‘as exciting as many of the pieces in the main exhibition!’.

Earth, Air and Water was a trial project for this year. It is hoped that a source of sponsorship can be found so that
it can continue, and grow, as an annual event. Anyone interested in sponsoring the event should contact Judi Darley on 01243 512301
