Dredging ship The Sospan Beaches itself
- Fri 24th May 2002
Sospan, the shingle spraying ship that is being used to bolster Hayling's defences against the elements today fell foul of them herself...
The ship, being operated by Westminster Dredging as part of the ongoing sea defence work, ended up beached on the Eastoke foreshore. The combination of strong winds and an 'incorrect angle of approach' conspired to push the vessel close to shore. Apparently without power to move back into deeper water Sospan beached and remained stranded for some 12 hours.
Havant Borough Council's coastal defence officer Lyall Cairns said:
'It is not a disaster there was no risk to the crew and no safety implications it is just a shame because it will delay the work slightly.'
Latest indications are that, after sustaining damage to its propellor Sospan will not be back in action until the 29th.
