BIKE RIDE -THE BIG HANDOUT

- Tue 6th Mar 2007

The amount pledged from last year’s ride now exceeds an astonishing £95,000, with Vodafone’s Team Sim having achieved matching funding of £500 each from the company, the eleven-strong team together raising over £7,500, before this boost. However, there is still over £20,000 of pledges yet to sent in or accounted for, from quite a few riders and Rider Liaison committee member and Islander, Kerry Taylor, is chasing up the laggards, to ensure that we have the funds in before the Charities Evening. This is once more to take place at Seacourt Tennis Club, this year on Saturday 10th March, with the beneficiaries being invited to receive their cheques and be entertained by the committee and riders. We expect to have a showing of motorcyclist support rider Councillor Dave Collins’s Ride 2006 video and the opportunity for many of the over 100 charities benefiting to ‘network’ and meet riders, committee and support on the evening.

The following are the charities nominated by riders:

Abbeyfield UK; Action Aid; AFIRM; Air Ambulance; Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust; Arthursheil Rescue Centre; Association of Children's Hospices; BBOWT; Start; Birth Defects Foundation; Breakthrough Breast Cancer; British Heart Foundation; British Kidney Patients Association; Cancer Research UK; Canine Partners; CFT Fund; Chase Children’s Hospice; Children’s Cancer Ward, Southampton; CLIC Sargent; Diabetes UK; Dreams Come True; E&N Marden Church; Playteam Association; Elizabeth Foundation; Epilepsy Action; Eyeless Trust; Families Need Fathers; Family Service Unit, Scotland; Ghana Projects; Hampshire Wildlife Trust; Havant Borough Talking Newspaper; Head & Neck Cancer; Headway; HHT; HI First Responders; HU Junior Soccer; Ikamva Labantu; In Ministry to Children; Jacqui Roberts Tribute Fund; Jo Homan Charitable Trust; Lake Taupo Hospice; Langstone Sailability; Leukaemia Research; MacMillan Cancer Relief; MacMillan Nurses; Maternity Fund PHT NHS Trust; Medical Physics Dept, Salisbury; Mencap; MNDA; Mothers Union; MS; Naomi House; NSPCC; Operation Smile UK; Orbis; Oxfam; PALS; Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice; Piam Brown Children’s Cancer Ward; Plumpton School Fund; Portsmouth Carers Association; QA Critical Care Unit; Rezurgence; RNIB; RNLI; Salisbury Hospice; Samantha Dickson Research Trust; Save the Children;  SCOPE; SID; Sightsavers; SPW.ORG; St Andrew’s, Ghana; St Mary's Children’s Ward; St Michael’s Church, Amberley; St Peter’s Trust; St Wilfrid's Hospice; Stroke Association; Teenage Cancer Trust; The Rowans; Theatre Royal; Wessex Cancer Trust; Winston's Wish.

SUPPORT FOR HAYLING UNITED

During the year, we find a number of opportunities to lend our support to local causes, with the Red Cross, Age Concern, Families in Crisis, Godbey House, the Hi Y Café, Hayling Island Cricket Club, the Scouts and other deserving causes already benefiting from donations. However, we have responded to appeals from HUFC for suitable donations, with the Emma Carter Appeal fundraising Vets football match on Boxing Day receiving £150 to add to their impressive fundraising on the day. Additionally, at the highly successful Harry Reknapp fundraising evening at the Sailing Club, we responded to his favoured Leukaemia Busters charity, by topping up HUFC’s donation of £750 to make the total £1,000 on the night.

SANTA RIDE

Christmas doesn’t seem long ago does it? The photo taken on Sunday 17th December indicates what fun was being had by a selection of the 61 cycling Father and Mother Christmases, as reported in February’s issue

PRACTICE RIDES

The Practice Ride team, consisting of Kevin Knight, Rick Hutchings, Pete Alloway and Jon Tawse have completed the schedule for this year and these are now available on our website, with some final details to be added. For those who are thinking of entering the Paris to Hayling, as well as those who have already entered, why not come along and join us? Initially, the cycling is pretty easy, as we start off with a few short and flat rides. In any case these are ideal opportunities to meet other cyclists and to savour the social aspect, which as been so crucial to the Ride’s success!

CHANNEL TO CHANNEL

As always we have one special “Super Practice Ride”, the Channel to Channel, which will be over the weekend of 14th/15th May. Now in it 8th year, this will again be from Weymouth to Hayling via Salisbury.  Not only is it ideal preparation for our French adventure, but it also offers an alternative ride for those who cannot make it in July. Pete McQuade organises this and can be contacted via mcquadep@aol.com or on 07748556411

ENTRY FOR RIDE 2007

Entry forms are now available and places can be secured with a deposit of £150, with the full entry fees being £275 for the 3-Day and £375 for the 6-Day. We are planning to take 180 riders, with 20 in support. Places are filling fast, but plenty are still available on both short and long rides.
