13000 Trees planted

- Thu 22nd Mar 2007

Chichester Harbour Conservancy has planted over 13,000 trees throughout the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) this winter – 3,000 more than expected. The trees were planted as part of the Conservancy’s annual tree planting programme, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

All of the trees planted in the AONB are native species, found locally in copses and hedgerows, and are grown in a Sussex nursery. Many existing hedgerows have been restored and new ones created. Volunteers returned to re-plant the section of hedgerow on Bosham that was stolen by thieves last year. New areas of copse have been planted, including at Cobnor farm, to provide shelters for wildlife and to enhance the natural landscape of the AONB.

Nicky Horter, AONB Officer said, “this years tree planting programme has been an amazing achievement. We simply could not have done it without the overwhelming support of our volunteers from the Friends of Chichester Harbour and Chichester Conservation Volunteers”.

If you would like to get involved in tree planting in the harbour next year, you can support the Friends of Chichester Harbour by joining work parties or making a donation to help fund the trees.
