Beautiful Maytree Saved!

- Sat 19th May 2007

The beautiful maytree that was the subject of the news item on 13 February 2007 has been reprieved following the Planning Inspectorate visit and decision on 17 May 2007. It may be recalled that Pullingers submitted a planning application to demolish Maytree Cottage and replace the house with four new dwellings. This proposal would have involved felling five trees protected by TPOs (including the beautiful Maytree) and numerous other trees. After careful consideration Havant Borough Council rejected the planning application, and now the Planning Inspectorate dismissed the appeal by Mr Danby on 17 May 2007. The overall conclussions of the Inspector state "I conclude that the development would cause significant harm to the character and appearance of the surrounding area and would result in the loss of protected trees." Residents now hope that the two directors of Pullingers will respect the wishes of local residents, Hayling Islanders (528 petition signers), Havant Borough Council and The Planning Inspectorate and constuct the single additional property that they have approval for and which will allow the retention of all TPO protected trees.
