About The Festival
The Hayling Island Scarecrow Festival is organised by the Hayling Island Market Town Initiative (MTI) Steering Committee - Hayling’s BEST – which is Working Together to Make Hayling Island the BEST place to Work, Rest and Play.
The recent Hayling Market Town Initiative (i.e. Hayling’s BEST) assessment of business, environmental, social and social & transportation aspects of life on Hayling revealed a number of gaps. One of these was the need for more activities that could involve all sections of the community. Scarecrow Festivals are held in a number of small towns and villages across the UK and are a fun way to involve the community and also to provide some stimulus to local tourism.
Anyone who wants to – individuals, schools, businesses, shops, rest homes, restaurants, fire stations, etc can make a Scarecrow and hang, tie, mount or otherwise display it on or around their house or premises. It has no point other than being a bit of fun!
The Hayling MTI has recently scooped two awards in the 'Action for Market Towns' South East Regional Awards the DVD “Postcard from Hayling” www.apostcardfromhaylingisland.co.uk in the Business & Enterprise category, and last year's Heritage & Tourism Residential survey in the Partnership & Strategic Working category.
