WEE WONDERS (TM) Regional Qualifier at Hayling Golf Club

The WEE WONDERS (TM) is a national golf competition devised to encourage youngsters into the challenge and fun of competitive golf. It is run by the PGA WEE WONDERS in association with the Golf Foundation. The competition is for youngsters from 5 to 12 years old and takes the form of a FLAG event in which each child is given 36 shots and the winner is the one who gets furthest round the course.











For the first time Hayling Golf Club was chosen to host one of the regional qualifying rounds which was held on the superb Par 3 course next to the Golf Club. The youngsters compete in various age groups.Forty youngsters (including 16 Hayling members) from as far afield as the Isle of Wight, Bournemouth, Addlestone and Horsham descended on the course on a dull and windy day on the 6th June.


All competed well but 3 youngsters stand out in my mind from the day. Firstly there was 10 year old Katherine Douglas from Shedfield who completed 10 holes She was followed by 10 year old Frankie Hoar from Hindhead who having shot the first 9 holes in par 27 - a feat many older players have difficulty in achieving – finally completed his 36 shot on the 12th.This was eclipsed by Billy-Joe Budgen from Canford Manor who at the age of 5 played his 36th shot from the 9th tee and was pin high on the 120-yard hole - surely a potential Tiger Woods! The winners and runners up of this round go forward to the regional finals at Foxhills Golf Club on Sunday 27th July. We wish them luck.











All the kids enjoyed the day, as did the parents who had brought them the many miles to Hayling. I thank them, many who were seconded into helping, together with the helpers from Hayling Golf Club. Special thanks must also go to Ray Gadd for his help in making the par 3 available to us at greatly reduced cost and Hayling Industrial and Ian Garside for their sponsorship of this event.
