Local author’s thriller makes Top Ten shortlist for World Book Day!

- Mon 4th Feb 2008

Hayling crime writer, Pauline Rowson, has cause to celebrate because her controversial thriller, In Cold Daylight, inspired by the tragic true story of fire fighters killed in the line of duty, has been voted by readers nationwide as one of the top ten books for World Book Day!

In Cold Daylight, was one of 100 books selected in November for the World Book Day prize and has proved so popular amongst readers in the UK that it has succeeded in attracting the highest number of votes to reach the shortlist of ten.

The inspiration for In Cold Daylight came after hearing that several fire-fighters from one watch had contracted cancer. The official conclusion was that the cancer wasn’t work-related, but many believe their cancer was contracted from exposure to hazardous chemicals in the line of duty. This should have been the end of the story, but Pauline blended the facts of this case within a dramatic fictional plot, creating a powerful novel.

In Cold Daylight, along with the nine other top books, is being promoted throughout libraries, independent bookshops, Waterstones and Borders in the UK. People can read about them and vote on line or through the local Library.

The votes accumulated in the previous round of voting have been wiped off. Voting starts again today on the ten top titles and runs until the end of February to find The Book To Talk About 2008, which will be announced on World Book Day 6 March.

Pauline says, ‘I’m over the moon at reaching the top ten. This is a huge step forward for me as a writer. I’m up against some tough competition from authors far more established than me, so it’s going to be difficult, but not impossible. Many local readers as well as national ones have come out in support of In Cold Daylight, which is great.
