Mother and Son Rescued from Langstone Harbour

- Fri 23rd May 2008

A ten year old boy and his mother both had to be rescued by Solent Coastguard yesterday afternoon after getting caught up in strong currents.

The boy was out using a body board in Langstone Harbour and got into trouble when he was caught in the tides. His mother rushed into the water to try and help but she also got trapped by the strong currents resulting in both of them hanging onto the board whilst drifting out to sea.

Luckily a member of the public had heard the cries for help and dialed 999. Solent Coastguard scrambled a rescue helicopter to the scene as well as Portsmouth RNLI inshore lifeboat and two coastguard rescue officers from Hayling. The Mother and Son were eventually rescued by the lifeboat nearly a mile out near to Gunner Point

Bother mother and son all though cold were safe and well and did not require any medical assistance.

Steven Mann from the Solent Maritime Rescue Coordination Center advises that coastal users should always check the weather and tide conditions before taking to the water and if anybody ever sees someone they think is in danger on the water to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
