Veteran Bevin Boy Honoured
- Tue 27th May 2008
Harry Wilkinson of Sandy Point was one of the 48000 young men conscripted in the War to work in the coal mines. These were the 'Bevin Boys' so called after Ernest Bevin, Minister of Labour and National Service.
Coal was essential to the nation's war effort in the days when coal powered many of Britain's factories, most of the trains and heated our homes, hospitals and schools. Many youngsters were taken straight from offices and non essential jobs and given a months training before being sent down the mines.
Harry is proud of his time spent down the mine and his contribution to the war effort. He said the work was dirty, dangerous and physically demanding but vital to our survival in those dark days. Recognition of the work of the Bevin Boys was long overdue.
Now retired with his wife Joan, to Hayling Harry was presented with his Bevin Boys Veteran commemorative badge and certificate by Mr David Willetts, MP at a ceremony also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Havant.
