Hayling Island Surf Cam

Hayling.co.uk have operated a surfcam at The Inn on The Beach for a number of years, with the technology currently in it's third incarnation.

The current set-up uses Oggle IP Camera Technology to deliver fast reliable video to a wide number of users. The technology itself was actually developed for the security/surveillance camera marketplace. However, the high compression levels that Oggle systems deliver also enable us to serve streaming images to the high number of concurrent users that this site can generate - particular when the weather is rough!

The system comprises of several key elements:

Firstly we have a high quality weather proof camera capable of withstanding being mounted outside at one of the most weather-beaten locations on the island.

The camera feeds images to the Oggle video compression unit. This not only shrinks the high resolution video to a size more appropriate, but compresses it so that more users can view it at one time. The Oggle unit also automatically creates archives of video and acts as a web server.

A router and firewall then connects this to the internet via a standard ADSL connection - allowing the Oggle applet on our site to serve the video.
